Injury is a major cause of child and adolescent death and disability throughout the world. International experience has shown that most injuries are not accidents. Injuries and deaths can be prevented, often by simple, available measures.

In 1993, injury specialists, researchers, policy makers, educators, medical personnel and advocates established The International Society for Child and Adolescent Injury Prevention (ISCAIP) to improve global dialogue and action for preventing and controlling child and adolescent injuries. The Society addresses both intentional and unintentional injuries.
